Looking for one of those cosy spots in London where there’s tonnes of romantic ambience but also enough hustle and bustle that it can help put those nerves at ease on a first or second date? Well, look no further because MFC has got you covered with our bar of the month.
Right in the heart of central London, a stone’s throw from the river, you’ll find London’s original wine bar, established in 1890, tucked away next to embankment station. The location is as perfectly central as you can get and the bar itself sits somewhere in the middle of upper-class-wine-connoisseur-chic and down-to-earth-minimalism (it is the oldest wine bar after-all). In short, no matter what kind of drinks date you’re after, either as a starting point for a whole evening of drinks and dinner or to stay there for the evening, making your way through the extensive wine list, this is definitely the place to be.
Gordon’s isn’t one of those places you go to every other night but should be saved in your back pocket for a lovely date spot or for an impressive wine hub hang out with friends, maybe the new friends you’ve made via MFC events!
To set the scene of what to expect at Gordon’s here’s a snippet from their history page over on their website.
“The bar is loved by old and young alike due to the totally unique atmosphere in which time seems to have stood still. As you enter the bar you find yourself in a room with old wooden walls covered in historical newspaper cuttings and memorabilia faded with age.”
You’ll find the bar to be busy and you’re not able to book so to impress a date, a top tip would be to get there a little early to secure a nice cosy spot. The decor remains untouched and original, lit by candles propped up in bottles you can imagine it’s both a great talking point and place to set the scene for something a little bit special. To ramp up the romance meter there’s even a cheese bar so you can do your own little plate of pairings with the wines which you select.
Overall, we certainly recommend Gordon’s as a go-to for a date with a little je ne sais quoi but it’s important to note that you can’t book and if you can’t get inside to sit and grab a glass in the wine cave or towards the back of the cellar cages then there’s enough room for 80 people outside – testimony to how good it is.
